TTC Riders Strike - this Friday the 13th I saw this on the news last night, so looked it up. With the recent bedbug outbreak, I'm thinking I may just join in.
http://transit.toronto.on.ca/archives/weblog/2009/11/10-some_ttc_r.shtml
There's a Facebook page too, apparently with carpooling possibilities on it, if anyone decides they want to take a stand and find "a better way" to get to work this Friday. Even if fares aren't increased, I think there are still many reasons for doing this.

Shed that weight! Hi everyone!
I have two medium hair cats that are almost 10 years old, a male and female. We took them to the vet last week for shots and check ups. Lucky weighs 12lbs and Prissy is at 9.5lbs. I've always been a little concerned about their weight, but the vet said that since they're big cats, their weight is fine, but don't let them gain any more and that yes, they would be okay to lose a pound or two but be careful with Prissy (9.5lbs).
So while struggling to get rid of all that shedding cat hair off of them, we're trying to come up with ways for them to diet. They both share a food bowl so we can't really tell who eats the most. We don't have money for a cat tree to try encourage some exercise, so does anyone have any ideas what we could do? They're not yet 10 and so they still have a long life ahead of them and we want to help them out.
Thanks!

Friday: Jammin' on the One Remember that episode of The Cosby Show in which the Huxtables visited Stevie Wonder in his recording studio, and he asked Theo what he was most likely to say at a party, and Theo replied, "Jammin' on the One!", and without even bothering to ask Theo what that even meant or why anyone on the planet would ever say something like that, Stevie went and made a stuttering rap song out of it on his synthesizer?
Well, there's a monthly improv jam named after it.
It's one of Toronto's foremost open improv jams, and it's back this Friday, November 13. This week's show will feature a performance by comedy troupe We're From Here, and some comic spoken word. This will be followed by an improv session in which anybody in the audience can take part.
That's at 14 Elm Street (near Dundas/Yonge), third floor (you have to ring a silly doorbell to get in), doors 7:30 p.m., no cover.

News... So I am kinda sick of the Toronto Star right now, I don't mind Globe and Mail/ National Post, but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for other Toronto news websites. Hopefully something that deals with print stories, as I don't get a lot of time to sit down and watch videos. Thanks!

Guess What People!!!!!!!!! Terry and I were visiting his ex-wife (yes all three of us are friends-weird as that may sound) and she had taken in a little kitten to save it from being dumped in the country. She couldn't afford to take the kitten to the vet and the kitten was antagonizing her old crabby cat so much, she asked if we would take her. We made the deal that if Courage cannot accept her at all by the end of the month, we will give her back to Wendy, spayed and pay for her all of her first-year vaccinations she will need. I'm so excited!! The new kitten is a female, which we named Cinder. She seems to be male-orientated which is a big relief for me. When we found Courage the summer of 2008, it was very obvious Courage had been abused by a man. Courage bonded tightly to me but we had to work hard on getting him to trust Terry. The abuse Courage suffered still affects him to this day. We have some scummy neighbors living next door who spent the entire weekend screaming, yelling, and slamming doors at each other. When they start fighting, it reminds Courage of his past abuse and he starts getting fearful of Terry again. I know it hurt Terry to watch how close Courage and I are and not get to be a part of it. With this new kitten, he now has a cat he can be tight with. I'm not giving her much attention so she will bond with Terry better and Courage won't feel like he lost his throne. Anyway, here are some pictures of Cinder's 1st day home with us.

A meeting with an old dog Last night we were out on our walk and Dahlia was sniffing around when I noticed, back toward a house, a dog tied out to the tree. I told David (my partner) to watch out as the dog started to come toward us. It moved slowly though and seemed interested in Dahlia. The strange thing? Dahlia didn't rush the dog. Usually when she sees a dog she gets so excited she has to run right over to it, sometimes a bit faster than she should. Sometimes she does a sort of crouch and freezes and THEN rushes the dog (I'm working on that one...she's better than she used to be).
But this time she went up slowly and the dogs touched noses and met very nicely. The dog was very calm and didn't rudely sniff Dahlia or anything. He just wanted to come say hi.
I noticed as he came into the light that the poor thing was missing patches of hair all over his body and some hair looked like it was growing back in. He looked like he might have mange or something along that line.
The owner then pulled in (her friends had let the dog out and were keeping an eye on him from inside the house -- I could see them in the window) and came over to talk to us. It turned out that the dog was named Zeke. He was a Newfie/Shepherd mix and he was 17 years old! She said he didn't have mange or anything like that, "he was just old" and apparently had some hormonal imbalances, etc. that was causing the hair loss. She had had him since she was in high school and just adored the dog.
And the really amazing thing? He still wanted to play. And Dahlia wanted to play too! She started play bowing in front of him and gently coming up to him with her play/growl face on. She would sort of dance around out of his range and then come up to him slowly and jump back. He even play bowed a couple times and ambled around her. It was like two dogs playing in slow motion and it was really awesome to watch. Just beautiful. The whole thing was making me tear up.
At one point, Dahlia play bowed and jumped back out of his range. He came over to her, leaned forward, and simply reached out a paw toward her. It was so incredibly sweet. I wish I had a photo of that moment. It's an image that will stay with me forever.

WTF: A speedy tailor Hiya, Toronto.
A friend has a few jackets and pants that need minor alterations (mostly letting out hems and sleeve lengths) on a quick turnaround. Pickup would have to be Saturday evening at the latest. West end is preferred, but not necessary (he's car enabled).
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Cheers and thanks, everyone! You, collectively, are the greatest.

New Year's Rental in Toronto I'd love to get away for New Year's eve, and had originally hoped to rent a chalet or a cottage outside the city somewhere. Alas, I have to work until 3PM on New Year's Eve and most of our friends have bailed.
Is there any such thing as a 2- or 3-bedroom short-term rental (condo, house, etc) in the city of Toronto that has a fireplace and a hot tub (indoor or outdoor)? I don't even know how to go about searching for something like that. I know we could just rent a hotel room, but we'd prefer something that can accommodate 4-6 (or even 8) people.
Any ideas?

If you're looking for something to do.... ....or celebrating your birthday this weekend *ahem* finefinemusic *ahem*
It should be IT'S MY PARTY!
Toronto, November 4, 2009 – The Garrison, Toronto’s newest concert venue is opening up its doors to more than just the best in local, indie and rock with It’s My Party Saturday, November 14, 2009.
The event, created by Kat Armstrong and syndicated-sex-columnist-cum DJ Sofi Papamarko, started out as a birthday party for Armstrong’s impending 30th birthday. “I didn’t want to wait and see what may be available for dancing that night.” Explained Armstrong, “So I said I’d like to host my own huge party and Sofi offered to DJ for me.”
“We wanted to do something different than all the theme nights that are becoming prevalent in Toronto and put fun back into going out dancing,” added Papamarko. “Enough with playing dress up and DJing while conforming to one specific era or genre of music.”
Armstrong thought that The Garrison was a great venue for the party from working with co-owner Shaun Bowring in his past life as booker at Sneaky Dee’s and knowing that if anyone would get why the girls wanted a less-costumey dance night, it’d be Bowring.
“Our set list is going to be great. We’re going back into the vaults, mixing it up and covering the right blend of music suitable to the most fickle of Toronto audiences.”
Papamarko has DJ’d fundraisers and parties like Shake a Tail. Both girls met while in high school and rekindled a friendship through Davy Love’s ubiquitous Blow Up and through modeling gigs. Armstrong is a professional Event and Project Manager who works in Not-for-Profit by day, but has always loved party promotion and fundraisers.

Selling to BMV How much can I expect to get from BMV for some paperback mysteries and other drug store fare? I'm just wondering if it's worth the trip.
Do you have any other suggestions for what I can do with a bunch of these books that I'm never going to read again? It doesn't seem worth it to sell them on LJ and organize a meet-up and all that.
Thanks, Toronto.

south Austin storage? I'm looking for a decent, not too expensive place to rent a 5x10 or 10x10 storage space. It's not temporary: we'll be using it for a long time to free up the garage as workspace so I can't go with anyplace super-expensive, like South Lamar Storage. I also don't want a place that tends to get broken into or is managed poorly. Anyone have any recommendations or warnings? Thanks very much.

swollen Last Friday, my boy Dylan was playing in the backyard with our other pups. I went to grab something real quick in the other room and then I heard Dylan yelp. Immediately, I came running. He was laying in the back by the fence. As soon as he saw me coming, he stumbled to his feet, hurried to me (I was still hurrying out by the door at this point). He then quickly lay down and stay there for a few minutes while I petted him. Because of his reaction of quickly laying down, the first thing I did was check his legs. But then I noticed a wound and a fairly large bald spot by his shoulder (we later examined the back yard and found his hair stuck on a broken tree branch. He must have run in to it. That branch and several others came down the next day).
At any rate, I cleaned out the wound, put neosporin on it and iced it down for awhile. After about half an hour to an hour, i fed him and he ate and drank without any problems. The bald spot around the wound is circular in shape - about 2" diameter. Since he was walking around and eating/drinking without any problems and the wound seemed to be okay, I didn't take him to the vet. Saturday he seemed fine but didn't want to run/play as much. Sunday he was running around and playing like his normal self. Everyday I cleaned and put more neosporin on it.
Then yesterday, he seemed fine most of the day, but around 9:00, it started swelling. My husband and I cleaned it out very thoroughly. I iced it for awhile and put more neosporin. The swelling went down.
When we got up this morning, Dylan refused to eat and the wound was swollen again. I let him outside and he just stood there looking sad. I let him nap for another hour or two and called in late to work. After his nap I got him to eat SOME of his food, but not all of it. This is very un-Dylan-like. He usually scarfs it down within 2 minutes. He's now playing a little with our other dog and seems happier than he did early this morning. But the not eating really worries me.
Our vet opens at 9 and i will call and make an appt then. The latest he's going to the vet is 1 b/c they have walk in hours then. But I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what i can do for him/what's wrong with him?
Thanks in advance for your help.
And...no post complete w/o pictures

I love Australia and I'm thinking about moving there in a few years, but I also love cats and I've heard that a lot of Aussies hate them because of their effect on wildlife. (Was recently reading about John Wamsley, ugh.) Can anyone confirm or deny this?
